President Trump Criticizes Poll That Now Has His Approval Rating at 36 Percent
A new poll out this morning from ABC News/Washington Post puts President Trump‘s approval rating at 36 percent, and he had this to say on Twitter in response:
The ABC/Washington Post Poll, even though almost 40% is not bad at this time, was just about the most inaccurate poll around election time!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 16, 2017
According to ABC News, this gives Trump “the lowest six-month approval rating of any president in polls dating back 70 years.”
36 percent approval was the same number a CBS poll found just last month.
The poll also provides some insight into how people are reacted to the last week of news about Russia and the Don Jr. meeting:
Sixty-three percent in this poll, produced for ABC News by Langer Research Associates, say it was inappropriate for Trump’s son, son-in-law and campaign manager to have met with a Russian lawyer during the campaign. Six in 10 also think Russia tried to influence the campaign, and among those who say so, 67 percent think Trump aides helped, similar to results in April.
However, the poll also shows that 52 percent of people believe the Democratic party is just against Trump, compared to 37 percent of people who believe they stand for something.
UPDATE –– 12:04 pm ET: As a few journalists have pointed out on Twitter, Trump’s claim about the poll being inaccurate itself isn’t quite correct:
Except abc/washpo among most accurate in country. Final poll= popular vote 47-43%, Clinton-Trump. Actual popular vote = 48-46% Clinton-Trump https://t.co/MIL3ZzyRa3

"Nearly 40 percent' is horrible for a new president. And WaPo/ABC had Clinton winning the popular vote by 3 percentage points (she won by 2) https://t.co/rAt1UZjN0x

On election eve, WaPo/ABC had it at Clinton 47%, Trump 43, +/- 2.5
Final popular vote result was Clinton 48.2%, Trump 46.1% https://t.co/7vFV0S3fvJ
