Priebus: The DNC is ‘Trying to Protect Hillary’ by Hiding Debate Process
Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus Sunday said the Democratic National Committee is trying to “protect” presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in her quest for the White House.
“The fact is, the DNC is trying to protect Hillary Clinton and they’re doing it by trying to hide their entire process,” Priebus told radio host John Catsimatidis on Cat’s Roundtable.
Priebus echoed sentiments of other Republicans who’ve accused the DNC of intentionally planning the debates during off-peak hours, noting last Saturday’s Democratic showdown occurred “while people are getting ready for Christmas and the holidays.”
The RNC chair added this move was “backfiring on them.”
Priebus also praised his party, but noted his Republican colleagues face a “tight race at the top of the ticket.”
“The Senate is important. It’s very critical and it’s always tough to hold the Senate, but I think we’re doing everything we can to do that,” Priebus said, insisting his party has a strong foothold in the major battleground states.
“Having candidates that are in tune with their states and that are unique to their states so you can win in a tough environment — you win in a presidential year — which is always harder because when turnout is through the roof, it’s always a little bit more unpredictable,” Priebus said.
“I expect we hold the House, hold the Senate and then it’s going to be a tight race at the top of the ticket,” Priebus predicted.
Priebus said he expects the Republican party to “have a nominee by mid-April,” at which point they “will be off to the races.”
“Obviously we’re not going to have that many candidates through February and March, I think that’s a safe thing for me to say,” Priebus added.
