According to CBS Sports’ Jason La Confora former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice could be reinstated within the next four weeks, pending an appeal over his indefinite suspension after video emerged of him knocking out his then-fiancée Janay Palmer.
Sources told La Confora that a hearing date has been set for Rice’s appeal, which is being handled by former U.S. District Court Judge Barbara Jones; the decision is expected shortly afterward. This would make Rice elibigle by mid-November, though he’d still be a highly toxic asset.
Rice was initially suspended two games, a suspension that became indefinite following the release of the video. La Confora’s sources believe Rice “has a strong case,” as the running back maintains he did not lie to the NFL about the initial incident, and that the NFL had access to the incriminating video the entire time, meaning the prolonged suspension was a public relations move.
No doubt the NFL would love to have Rice back to refocus on problems of violence against women endemic in the league just as the season is nearing its apex.
