Soon-To-Be SNL Host Betty White Won’t Do Nudity Or “Dope Jokes”
After a lengthy Facebook campaign, Betty White will host Saturday Night Live on May 8.
We asked the 88-year-old about the campaign on a conference call this afternoon in which she spoke about the pressure of SNL, “dope jokes” and nudity.
Since the week hasn’t started yet, White isn’t sure of the content of the show (that process begins Monday). “I have veto power if it’s something I really don’t want to do,” she said. But: “They promised me I wouldn’t have to do any nudity.” (Also, “no dope jokes,” she said.)
After putting out a call on Twitter, I asked White this question from @Ellie029: “When/how did she become aware of Facebook campaign?”
“I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “At first I thought they were putting me on. It came out of left field. I was astounded. I told my agent to please say thank you, I appreciate it but no thank you. He said, ‘you have to do it. I’ll divorce you if you don’t do it.'”
White said later she was “scared to death” of the experience, but not because of the notoriously long schedule it entails. “I’m a stay-up-later, get-up-earlier,” she said. “If I get four, five good hours a night that’s all the sleep I need.”
One reporter asked White about the possibility this episode might be an all-woman show (the Mother’s Day show will include guest appearances by several female past SNL cast members). “I hope not, but if it is I’ll hit on every member of the crew,” she said. (Also, I can confirm she did gently hit on the New York Times‘ Dave Itzkoff.)
The White-hosted show, on May 8, features Jay-Z as the musical guest, who White called “the hottest thing since sliced bread.”
