Stephen Glass Denied Entry to California Bar

 

Stephen Glass, the fabulist who invented parts or all of dozens of articles for The New Republic in the late 90s, was denied entry to the California bar on Monday.

The California Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Glass has “not sustained his heavy burden of demonstrating rehabilitation and fitness for the practice of law.” The Court said it had examined Glass’ articles and “ultimately identified fabrications that he previously had denied or failed to disclose,” and determined that he “was not forthright in acknowledging the defects in his New York bar application.” It also said that many of the efforts Glass had made toward atonement had doubled as self-serving.

Glass was a law student while at TNR, and had previously been denied entry to the New York state bar. He has been working as a law clerk for a firm in Los Angeles, largely dealing with pro bono cases. A smattering of his friends and former professors testified on his behalf at the hearing.
