The #DemocracySpring Protests Might Actually Lead to Hearings By Lawmakers

Screen Shot 2016-04-23 at 1.41.39 PMIn spite of over 1,200 arrests being made during a week of protesting — some of which were very high-profile — one of the major complaints that came from the organizers of Democracy Spring was that there was minimal news coverage of their event, which was set up to demonstrate against money in politics. As it turns out, someone was still listening.

According to Huffington Post, Rep. John Sarbanes rallied other Democratic lawmakers to send a letter to the House Judiciary Committee. The letter asks the committee to hold hearings on five different pieces of legislation: the Voter Empowerment Act, Government By The People Act, Democracy for All Amendment, Automatic Voter Registration Act and Voting Rights Advancement Act. Each of these is “intended to create a public financing system for congressional elections, overturn Citizens United v. FEC and other campaign finance-related court decisions, and expand voting rights.”
