At the top of today’s broadcast of The View, the panel tackled the breaking news that President Donald Trump had fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and nominated CIA Director Mike Pompeo to be Tillerson’s replacement. And of course, they had jokes.
Right off the bat, Whoopi Goldberg riffed on the soon-to-be new secretary of state’s name, namecalling Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo. The audience then cheered when Goldberg noted that the person designated to replace Pompeo as CIA director, Gina Haspel, will be the first woman ever to lead the agency.
Co-hosts Sara Haines and Sunny Hostin then commented on the news of Tillerson’s termination, pointing out that Tillerson appeared to be fired for not toeing the company line and highlighting the fact that Trump specifically said that he and Tillerson disagreed on a number of things.
“You don’t need to be in an echo chamber or a sycophant,” Hostin said. “You want people who can challenge you and debate you.”
This caused Meghan McCain to do a ‘But Obama,’ claiming the former administration was filled with “like-minded sycophants,” leading to a bit of a tussle with the other panelists. McCain would go on to say that Pompeo was a very qualified individual to lead the State Department.
At the end of the segment, Haines reacted to the reports that Tillerson only learned about his firing when he saw this morning’s tweet from Trump.
“Trump does it like Sex in the City,” she exclaimed. “He leaves a break-up note on a post-it for everybody.”
With the crowd laughing and cheering, the rest of the panel reacted to that bit of news on Tillerson’s ouster, expressing legitimate shock.
“Well, c’est la vie,” Goldberg sighed, tossing it to break.
