This BYU Fake Punt Might Have Been the Dumbest Play Call in the History of Football
Thursday’s late night showdown between Boise State and BYU, won by the Broncos 28-27, was crazy in so many respects. But a second quarter fourth down stood out thanks to, quite simply, one of the dumbest play calls in the history of the sport.
BYU had fourth and 19 on their own 5 yard line. Punter Jonny Linehan took the snap, and darted to his left on a designed run.
A fake punt. On fourth and 19. From his own end zone.
This nonsense went about as well as you might expect. Boise tackled Linehan at the 3 yard line, and took possession.
ESPN announcers Jason Bennetti and Kelly Stouffer were understandably flabbergasted.
“That’s one of the strangest calls you will ever see,” Bennetti said.
“That’s one of the most foolish calls you will ever see,” Stouffer added. “If indeed it was called by a coach on the sideline.”
Sure enough, it was. At halftime, BYU head coach Kalani Sitake confirmed that the fake was indeed a designed play.
“On film, we thought we had it. Wanted to be aggressive. We came to win the game. It just didn’t work out.”
No…no it did not. Watch this massive fail above, via ESPN.
