President Donald Trump defended his administration’s use of tear gas on migrants who attempted to cross the U.S. Southern border on Sunday.
Speaking with reporters in Mississippi ahead of a campaign rally in Biloxi, the president claimed that a “minor form” of tear gas was used.
“First of all, the tear gas is a very minor form of the tear gas itself,” Trump said. “It’s very safe.”
Trump went on to blame parents for exposing their children to the gas.
“But you really say, why is a parent running up into an area where they know the tear gas is forming?” Trump said. “And they’re running up with a child.”
The president went on to claim adults are attempting to cross with children who aren’t theirs in an effort to receive preferential treatment.
“In some cases you know they’re not the parents,” he said. “These are people they call them grabbers, they grab a child because they think they’re going to have a certain status by having a child.”
