Trump Tells Perry to Get New Glasses, Bush to Get a Better Iraq Answer

dingusesOne of Donald Trump’s many peculiarities, and perhaps the one that endears him to us scavengers in the news business, is his insistence on responding to almost literally every single thing said about him.

This is an idiosyncrasy that will be sorely tested as Trump transitions from freelance loudmouth to presidential candidate. There are upwards of 20 political foes in the 2016 election, all of whom will be asked about Trump multiple times and many of whom will likely criticize him. Can Trump respond to them all?

We’re getting a preview today, as former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and former Texas Governor Rick Perry, both rivals for the GOP nomination, condemned Trump for his remarks about Mexican immigrants. Over the weekend Trump responded to both, telling Perry to get new glasses and Bush to get a better Iraq response.

“Today, Jeb Bush once again proves that he is out of touch with the American people,” Trump wrote Saturday. “Just like the simple question asked of Jeb on Iraq, where it took him five days and multiple answers to get it right, he doesn’t understand anything about the border or border security. In fact, Jeb believes illegal immigrants who break our laws when they cross our border come ‘out of love.'”

On Sunday, Trump responded almost immediately to Perry’s characterization of his comments as “offensive” on This Week:

This followed a tweetstorm about the death of a tourist at the hands of an illegal immigrant in San Francisco, as well as blanket media appearances. Trump is surging in the polls thanks to all the attention, which builds off his name recognition, but he could just as easily wear out his welcome among the voters currently entranced by him.
