Trump Tells Reporter He’ll ‘Let You Know’ If He Actually Plans to Serve as President
When a New York Times reporter asked Donald Trump if he actually planned to serve as president, should he be elected, the answer was startlingly vague.
“I’ll let you know how I feel about it after it happens,” he reportedly said.
The Times‘ Jason Horowitz writes:
It is, of course, entirely possible that Mr. Trump is playing coy to earn more news coverage. But the notion of the intensely competitive Mr. Trump’s being more interested in winning the presidency than serving as president is not exactly a foreign concept to close observers of this presidential race.
Horowitz quotes Stuart Stevens, an advisor to Mitt Romney‘s 2012 presidential run, as saying that Trump is “a con man who is shocked his con hasn’t been called.”
“He has no sense of how to govern,” Stevens added. “He can’t even put together a campaign.” (Stevens had previously cautioned Republicans against being associated anywhere near Trump by appearing at the RNC given his historically poor approval ratings.)
The remark is unlikely to quell wariness from GOP leaders about Trump’s suitability and capacity to take the campaign seriously.
