Was Nikki Haley Duped by Russian Comics to Comment on the Island of ‘Binomo’? (Which Doesn’t Exist)

There are a total of 193 member states in the United Nations. “Binomo” is not one of them. It does not exist.

But Nikki Haley — the U.S. ambassador to the U.N. — might not know that.

In a video uploaded to YouTube, a Russian comedy duo called Vovan and Lexus uploaded audio of a phone call in which they claim to have tricked Haley into believing she was speaking with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. As part of the call, a prankster who presenting himself as Morawiecki asked about Binomo — supposedly an island nation in the South China Sea.

Here is an excerpt of the conversation the duo claims to have had with the U.N. ambassador.

Comic: You know Binomo?

Haley: Yes, yes.

Comic: They declared independence. They had elections, and we suppose Russians had its intervention.

Haley: Yes, of course they did. Absolutely.

Comic: And now this Binomo land makes the situation in the South China Sea even more tense.

Haley: And we’re aware of that. And we’ve been watching that very closely. And I think we’ll continue to watch that as we deal with the issues that keep coming up about the South China Sea.

Comic: Yes, that’s correct. What should be done because of this Binomo?

Haley: Let me find out exactly what our stance is on that, and what if anything the U.S. is doing or thinks should be done. And I will report back to you on that as well.

In a statement to the Charleston Post and Courier, a spokesman for Haley neither confirmed nor denied that the ambassador participated in the call.
