Watch Bill Belichick Come Dangerously Close to Being Affable in Tonight Show Guest Spot

You know the book on New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. His public persona is often that of a grouch. He has no use for newfangled technology like InstantChat and SnapFace, and he has even less use for dumb questions from sports reporters.

But if the notoriously cranky coach was ever going to be in a good mood, it was going to be Monday on The Tonight Show, just one day after his team’s Super Bowl comeback for the ages.

Appearing with Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman, the coach was smiling, laughing, and genuinely affable.

In response to a question from host Jimmy Fallon about whether the Pats ever meditate, Belichick held Edelman’s hand and deadpanned, “We do a lot of that.”

The coach also joked that the round of applause they’d received from the Tonight Show audience was the warmest reception he’d ever gotten from a New York crowd — given that it’s the home of an AFC East rival, the New York Jets.

“I gotta tell ya,” Belichick said. “When [Belichick’s wife] Linda and I got back to the room about four o’clock, in the morning, they have the replay on. And we’re like, ‘You know what? We gotta watch this and make sure.’…Make sure this came out the way we thought and it wasn’t a dream.”
