President Obama Speaks at Navy Yard Shooting Memorial
At 5:00 p.m. on Monday afternoon, President Barack Obama joined families of the victims of last Monday’s Navy Yard shooting.
The memorial took place at the Washington Marine Barracks, not far from the Navy Yard where gunman Aaron Alexis opened fire one week ago, leaving twelve dead and another eight wounded. Alexis, who had been hearing voices and had a history of gun incidents, was eventually killed by authorities.
Obama’s presence at memorials of mass shootings is unfortunately familiar, as he has spoken at memorials for the Sandy Hook shooting, the Aurora shooting, the Fort Hood shooting, the Oak Creek shooting, and the Tucson shooting that included Representative Gabby Giffords, among others.
Washington, D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, and Navy Secretary Ray Mabus all spoke, with Obama’s comments coming at 5:30.
