WATCH: Trump Delivers Address on New Steel, Aluminum Tariffs LIVESTREAM
President Trump will soon deliver his economic policy proclamation for new tariffs to be levied on aluminum and steel imports into the United States. The proclamation is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. EST.
Trump held a cabinet meeting earlier today where he previewed his proposal for a 25% tax on foreign steel and 10% for aluminum.
“We’re going to be very fair, we’re going to be very flexible, but we’re going to protect the American worker as I said I would do in my campaign,” Trump said. “At the same time, we have some friends and some enemies where we have been tremendously taken advantage of over the years.”
Indications suggest that White House officials were scrambling recently to formulate Trump’s tariffs, which will apparently go into effect two weeks from now. Trump will deliver the specifics while he is surrounded by the metal industry workers he had as his guests today, and its possibly he will talk about NAFTA renegotiations and which countries will be granted exemption from his tariffs.

Trump’s decision comes amid another week of chaos for the White House, not only because of the departure of economic adviser Gary Cohn (who opposed the tariffs), but also because many Republican figures are concerned that this will start an international trade war that could hurt the country.
