In today’s latest lesson of never believing anything ever, the “Worst Twerk Fail EVER” YouTube video that momentarily lightened everybody’s Syria-soggy lives last week is, wait for it, fake.
The video was actually produced by Jimmy Kimmel over two months ago and posted surreptitiously on YouTube, with no ties back to the Kimmel show. The woman who appears to set herself on fire after her homemade twerking video goes wrong is actually a stuntwoman named Daphne Avalon:
The YouTube clip, which garnered over 9 million views and made the rounds on television, cut off abruptly. That’s because in the full version, which Kimmel revealed on his show Monday night, the late night host enters the apartment in an identical pink shirt to that worn by the twerkstress, and puts out her legfire with an extinguisher he apparently brought from home.
Avalon admitted that many friends, family members, and even ex-boyfriends contacted her after the video went viral, forcing her to feign several days’ worth of embarrassment.
The prank even had the fortune of good timing, as Miley Cyrus’ performance at the MTV Video Music Awards rendered the entire country unable to shut up about twerking for two slow August weeks.
So always remember, internet troubadours: there are no sharks in the streets, eagles don’t snatch kids, and never, ever trust late night hosts. Do, however, trust Mediaite, which did not cover the twerking video.
