Why is CNN’s Lisa Ling Taking Off Her Clothes for a Network Promo?

“This is my most revealing season yet,” said Lisa Ling, as part of a teaser for the upcoming new episodes of CNN’s This is Life — an investigative docu-series hosted by Ling.

In case one is inclined not to take her at her word, the host is seen disrobing before a mirror. Though she does not appear in the buff, the 30-second spot is quite suggestive. It is a provocative promo — perhaps unlike any other CNN has aired throughout the years.

But it is far from gratuitous, given that number of This is Life episodes this season are slated to focus on sex. Further, Ling will host a companion digital series called This is Sex. That show, according to a network press release, plans to explore “the taboos around sex in America and the ways in which sexuality has been stigmatized, policed and politicized.”

As such, this promo is not only within bounds, it is also a thought-provoking, effective ad.
