‘Are You Sh*ttin’ Me?’ Republicans React Poorly to Trump Picking Matt Gaetz as AG

President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) as his attorney general has not gone over well within the Republican Party.

Trump on Wednesday announced the nominations of several key figures to potentially fill out his cabinet. None sent the political world into a frenzy quite like Gaetz’s, with members of his own party floored by the decision.

Now, to be clear, the Senate is in charge of confirming cabinet appointments. But that didn’t stop Capitol Hill reporters from asking House Republicans — and any elected official, really — for their thoughts on Gaetz being appointed to lead the Justice Department.

Shortly after the announcement, CNN’s Manu Raju spotted Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on Capitol Hill and asked for his immediate reaction to Gaetz’s nomination. Graham was noncommittal.

GRAHAM: Yeah, I don’t know yet. I’ll think about that one.

RAJU: Do you have any concerns about it?

GRAHAM: We’ll see.

Gaetz is currently under investigation for allegations of sexual misconduct, illicit drug use, and accepting improper gifts. Asked by Raju about the allegations, Sen. John Corbyn (R-TX) “I’m sure that will come up” during Gaetz confirmation hearing.

Not everyone in the party was in poor spirits after the announcement. Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie simply told people to “suck it up” and accept the possibility of Gaetz becoming the attorney general.
