CNN senior national security analyst Juliette Kayyem reacted to President Donald Trump’s announcement on Monday that he was deploying the National Guard to Washington, DC and federalizing the local police force.

Kayyem, who is also a lecturer at Harvard’s Kennedy School, is recognized as “a national leader in homeland security and crisis management.”

She live-tweeted as Trump spoke, with her first comment noting, “Trump has no idea what the ‘home rule’ Act is. This is significantly more than at first disclosed: it is taking over the DC police department and also with deployment of the National Guard.”

She went on to hammer the president for bringing partisan attacks into his announcement, as he accused “liberals” of being soft on crime.
“By putting this in context of ‘liberal’ and ‘not liberal’ he is undermining any basis for this deployment. The numbers do not support this,” she argued, adding:

He is not prepped; he is confused; he is going off script.

There is crime. That is all he is saying. Crime exists. It exists in red states too, often worse than blue ones. But he is going off and off and off script.

Kayyem concluded her commentary with a warning, writing, “I cannot stress enough how dangerous this deployment/takeover is. Nobody is going to have any idea who is in charge, why, who reports to whom. It is intended to create more confusion, and crime. Trump is also confused.”
