‘That Would Be the End of His Candidacy’: Ex-GOP Congressman Cites Troubling Polling Data Point for Trump

While Donald Trump maintains a hammerlock on Republican support for the party’s nomination and is running close to President Joe Biden, former Rep. Charlie Dent (R-PA) noted there’s a giant warning sign for the former president.

On Tuesday, MSNBC host Richard Lui noted a Wall Street Journal poll released this month showing Trump ahead of Biden by four points. However, the survey also showed that if Trump is convicted before the election, the numbers swing in Biden’s favor by one point, which is still within the poll’s margin of error. Nevertheless, Dent predicted that a conviction would be downright fatal for Trump’s campaign.

“Trump has the loyalty of millions of voters, but these polls indicate it’s not that simple,” Lui said.

“Of course,” Dent replied before pointing to data in the poll showing that one-third of Republicans believe Trump should not be the nominee if he is convicted:

And while right now, Trump seems to be energized by the fact that he’s indicted, you know, back down here on planet Earth where people dwell, indictments for candidates usually spell political death. And a conviction is even worse. And so, that’s why people like Chris Christie are hanging around in this race because they know the dynamics of this race can change overnight upon a criminal conviction. Interestingly enough, that poll, it showed about a third of Republican voters would be very uncomfortable – perhaps walking away from Trump – in the event he is convicted. And of course, that would be the end of his candidacy.

Trump has been indicted in four jurisdictions – two of which stem from his attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Another case centers on his retention of government documents after he left office. The fourth relates to the alleged falsification of business records to conceal hush money payments to cover up extramarital affairs.
