House Democrat Brutally Corrects Republicans’ Chart Misrepresenting Illegal Border Crossings Under Trump

Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) used his time during Wednesday’s House Committee on Homeland Security hearing to correct a chart of border crossings in recent years, which is often cited by Republicans as proof that Trump’s immigration policies worked.
The hearing run by the GOP was called, “A Country Without Borders: How Biden-Harris’ Open-Borders Policies Have Undermined Our Safety and Security,” and primarily focused on blasting the Biden administration on immigration – a key issue for the GOP this November.
“Thank you. Well, so I just want to clarify this chart. I know that this chart has also been discussed by a few of my colleagues and Ms. Greene and the chairman and others. But I just think this chart is important for us to actually look at this and actually be accurate,” Garcia said, pulling out a chart titled, “Illegal Immigration Into the U.S.”
“Right now, it says that Trump left office at this point in the chart. That’s actually not when Donald Trump left office,” Garcia continued, pointing to an arrow that shows Trump left office in early 2020.
“Donald Trump actually left office right here on this chart. That’s right,” Garcia said as he affixed an arrow to early 2021.
“And so, you know, we’re talking about charts. We should be very accurate when Donald Trump actually left office. And you can see that the actual immigration and what’s happened with border crossings was already going up by the time Donald Trump left office. And so I think it’s important that when we have charts and I appreciate being allowed to use this one. That were accurate about actually when this actually happened. So facts are really important,” he concluded.
The official X account for the Democrats on the committee later shared a clip of Garcia’s comments and wrote, “Republicans (including Trump) love to trot out this chart but it has a huge lie: Trump left office in 2021 just as numbers were skyrocketing.”
