House Votes to Censure Rashida Tlaib as 22 Democrats Help Republicans Pass Resolution
Twenty-two Democrats crossed the aisle to censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) late Tuesday night. Four Republicans voted against the measure.
Tlaib dodged a separate censure attempt last week when the House voted to table a resolution from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA). The measure accused her of “leading an insurrection.” In that vote, 23 Republicans voted to kill it.
The latest resolution, introduced by Rep. Rich McCormick (R-GA), accused Tlaib of “promoting false narratives regarding the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel and for calling for the destruction of the state of Israel.”
On Friday, Tlaib posted a video featuring pro-Palestinian demonstrators chanting, “From the river to the sea,” which is regarded as a call for Palestine to stretch from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea – a span that encompasses Israel. The resolution calls the phrase a “widely recognized as a genocidal call to violence to destroy the state of Israel and its people.”
The vote was 234 in favor with 188 against. Four members voted “Present.” Upon the resolution’s adoption, some members cheered and clapped.
The Democrats who voted for the resolution were Reps. Steve Cohen (TN), Jim Costa (CA), Angie Craig (MN), Donald Davis (NC), Lois Frankel (FL), Jared Golden (ME), Dan Goldman (NY), Josh Gottheimer (NJ), Greg Landsman (OH), Susie Lee (NV), Kathy Manning (NC), Jared Moskowitz (FL), Wiley Nickel (NC), Chris Pappas (NH), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA), Pat Ryan (NY), Bradley Schneider (IL), Kim Schrier (WA), Darren Soto (FL), Ritchie Torres (NY), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL), and Frederica Wilson (FL).
The four Republicans to vote against the measure were Reps. Ken Buck (CO), John Duarte (CA), Thomas Massie (KY), and Tom McClintock (CA).
