J.D. Vance Reads Dr. Seuss on the Senate Floor

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) took a page from Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) playbook on Monday by reading a work by Dr. Seuss on the Senate floor.

Vance had just wrapped up his latest argument against sending further aid to Ukraine, where many are suffering under Russia’s occupation and ongoing onslaught, to celebrate a family milestone.

“Now, I want to move on to another argument. But before I do, I am mindful of something that’s very close to my heart, personally. I have three beautiful children,” Vance went on, before announcing that his middle child, a “little guy” named Vivek Gabriel Vance had turned four years old on Monday.

“And I’m sorry, Vivek, that I can’t be with you for your birthday dinner, but I want you to know that Daddy loves you very much. And I’m going to read this into the record because maybe you can watch it at home,” Vance said, before beginning Oh, the Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss. Vance read the entire poem that ended with these words:

On and on you will hike,
And I know you’ll hike far
and face up to your problems
whatever they are.

You’ll get mixed up, of course,
as you already know.
You’ll get mixed up
with many strange birds as you go.
So be sure when you step.
Step with care and great tact
and remember that Life’s
a Great Balancing Act.
Just never forget to be dexterous and deft.
And never mix up your right foot with your left.

And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed!
(98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.)

KID, YOU’LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!

So…
be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O’Shea, (or Vivek)
You’re off the Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So…get on your way!

“I love you,” Vance finished before getting right back to business.

“Returning to the matter at hand, Madam President, er, Mr. President, excuse me. How much time remains?”
