Democratic strategist James Carville was surprised to see conservative media get “kind of mean” with former President Donald Trump after his Tuesday debate performance.

Carville and journalist Al Hunt broke down the debate in a Wednesday episode of the Politics War Room podcast. Carville praised Vice President Kamala Harris’s performance and said he was surprised to see how conservative media was responding to Trump the morning after.

“Sitting there looking at some of the conservative coverage, I mean they were kind of mean to him,” he said.

“How dare you disappoint us,” Hunt said, describing some of the coverage he saw. He also pointed to criticism in the editorial section of the Wall Street Journal.

“Did you expect something else? Really? What did you think was going to happen?” Carville said.

The political strategist called Harris “particularly well-prepared” and argued Trump flubbed on what should have been his number one issue, which is the southern border and how it’s been handled under President Joe Biden’s administration.

Trump, he said, “walked into a trap” and got baited into talking about things like crowd sizes over the actual issues.

“The big issue was the southern border. She more than acquitted herself last night. I thought she was pretty good on that. And so they go to him and he’s talking about crowd sizes,” Carville said. “So he’s got the number one issue that he should have, the issue chorus is saying, just talk about the issues — okay, he had a chance to talk about the issues and he talked about crowd size.”

During an exchange on immigration, Trump turned to crowd sizes to respond to Harris trolling him by claiming that many who show up to Trump’s rallies end up leaving early.

“People don’t leave my rallies. We have the biggest rallies, the most incredible rallies in the history of politics,” Trump said.
