CBS News’ latest polling on Americans’ attitudes toward the Trump administration found some bad news for the president on two of his signature issues – the economy and immigration.

Trump campaigned in 2024 on the promise of bringing down prices “on day one” in order to beat back Biden-era inflation, but so far Americans are not satisfied with the result. CBS’s poll found that 64% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of inflation, while only 35% approve. The result is a marked change from March, when 54% disapproved and 46% approved.

The poll found a similar result when asking respondents how they feel about new tariffs on imported goods: 60% said they opposed them, while 40% are in favor.

The survey, which was done in coordination with YouGov, also found half of respondents believe the Trump administration has made them “financially worse off,” and 62 percent believe Trump’s policies have driven food and other grocery costs higher.

On immigration, 56% of respondents now disapprove of Trump’s handling of the issue, while 44% approve. This result is a flip from March, when 46% disapproved and 54% approved of Trump’s handling of immigration. The survey did find that 64% of Americans believe Trump’s policies are bringing down border crossings.

The survey focused on Trump’s methods and asked if Hispanics “being subject to more searches” is “fair” or “unfair” — with 78% choosing the latter. The survey also found 54% believe Trump’s tactics on immigration are “too tough,” a strong contrast from the same question about Biden in 2021 when only 15% said the same. 57% said at the time that Biden’s policies were “not tough enough.”

The poll was conducted from July 16th to 18th among 2,343 adults across the country and has a 2.5% margin of error.
