YouGov released a new poll this week on Americans’ views of President Donald Trump, his handling of the economy, and their optimism for the future. The poll found a whopping 75% of Americans believe that Trump’s tariffs will increase prices, and a strong majority wants those additional costs explained to them on the packaging.
The poll of 1,850 adult U.S. citizens, conducted between May 2nd and 5th, also found that “Majorities of Democrats and Republicans think Trump’s tariffs will lead to price increases. Among Republicans, the share who think tariffs will raise prices ‘a lot’ has increased 8 percentage points in the past two weeks, to 22% from 14%.”
Additionally, 46% of respondents said they believe that Trump’s tariffs “are harmful to the economy and consumers, with no real long-term benefits” – as opposed to 38% who said the tariffs “may cause short-term economic pain, but lead to long-term economic growth.”
61% of those polled said they want businesses to label on products how much the price will go toward paying the tariff. “80% of Democrats, 61% of Independents, and 42% of Republicans would prefer for businesses to do this,” noted the poll’s summary.
In late April, a furious Trump called Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to protest after Punchbowl News reported that Amazon would slap labels on products explaining how Trump’s tariffs increased prices.
CNN first reported on the call, noting it “came shortly after one of the senior officials phoned the president to inform him of the story.”
“Of course he was pissed,” a senior official told CNN, “Why should a multibillion dollar company pass off costs to consumers?”
YouGov’s poll also found that Americans’ faith in the economy has dropped significantly following an “upbeat streak that started last summer.”
The poll found that Americans who believe their household’s financial situation will be worse off in a year is now nearly tied with those who believe it will be better off – 29% to 30% respectively. 28% believe it will be the same. In December of last year, following Trump’s election win, nearly 40% of Americans believed their finances would be better off, while only 26% believed they would be worse off.
