Radio host Frank Morano asked recently expelled Republican congressman George Santos on Tuesday whether he thought he was “gonna get away with” the many false statements he made.

During an interview with Santos on his WABC show The Other Side of Midnight, Morano grilled the former congressman over the many false biographical statements he had made leading up to and during his time in Congress.

“I understand, you know, the idea of different aides coming up with a resume or different aides coming up with a life story that may not be accurate and you feel pressured to go along with that,” said Morano, “but even something like claiming that you were on the volleyball team at Pace University in that interview with Bernie & Sid, why do that? I mean, what votes is that gonna get you having played volleyball? Why make something like that?”

Santos refused to answer the question, telling Morano that he had explained himself elsewhere.

Morano then asked, “You said you kind of regret anybody that you may have hurt. Would you have done specific things differently over the course of the last three years?”

“I would have started by surrounding myself with people, and different people, and I would have actually not just trusted people at face value and dug more into their history,” said Santos, who told Morano that got “hurt” because he was “naive” and “trusted everyone that came my way.”

For his final question on Santos’ past, Morano questioned:

When you were in the midst of everything, understanding that people get caught up in exaggerations or mistruths or outright lies in the midst of a campaign, did you think that you were going to get away with this? Or did you always realize that in the back of your brain that your trouble with the truth was going to come out?

“Frank, here’s how I’ll put it to you. When we make mistakes in life, I don’t think we think them through,” replied Santos. “That’s really the answer. Stupid doesn’t usually take a lot of thought– isn’t put into it. So that’s the best way I can genuinely answer that question for you.”
