Ron DeSantis Claims ‘Palestinian Arabs’ Have Turned Bethlehem Into a ‘Pigsty’
Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis claimed “Palestinian Arabs” had turned Bethlehem into a “pigsty” on Friday during a speech on why America should stand with Israel.
During a Q&A at the Thanksgiving Family Forum, where DeSantis answered questions alongside Republican primary rivals Vivek Ramaswamy and Nikki Haley, The Family Leader CEO Bob Vander Plaats asked, “Why do we stand with the nation of Israel?”
DeSantis replied:
I think there’s a number of reasons. One, they’re our only tried and true ally in the entire Middle East. They’re the only democracy in the Middle East. They’re the only country in that region that shares our values. We have a great economic relationship, we have great cultural ties, and that’s been true for the 75+ years that they’ve been in existence. But Israel is a special country because our entire civilization, Western civilization, was birthed in the Holy Land. We are based on the Judeo-Christian tradition. You would not have the United States of America if you did not have the thousands of years of history that is represented in the Bible, and if you go to Israel and you take out your Bible, you can walk exactly what is recorded there. It is real history, and that is just something that’s unique. There’s no other country that would have that type of resonance with us given the history, where you have obviously the Old Testament and then the birth of Christianity.
After noting that you can “walk in the footsteps of where Jesus walked,” and see sites from the Old Testament, DeSantis claimed, “If Israel was not in charge of those sites, you would not have the freedom to go celebrate at any of those sites. The Arabs would not allow that.”
He continued, “In fact, Bethlehem is controlled by the Palestinian Arabs, and so there’s a church where you can go, where they say is where Christ was born, and it’s a beautiful church, but you walk out– well first of all, it’s like a pigsty, the city, it’s not well kept, and then they built this massive mosque right in front of it to like tower over it.”
DeSantis concluded, “So the Israelis are caretakers of the most important history that we have.”
