Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) demanded Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas “deploy special drone-detection” over New Jersey and New York.
Recently, reports of drone sightings across New York and New Jersey as well as at a U.S. air base located in Germany have caused widespread uneasiness about the mysterious objects. Mayorkas claimed during a Sunday interview that a foreign power was not beyond the drones.
“There are thousands of drones flown every day in the United States,” Mayorkas told George Stephanopoulos. “Recreational drones, commercial drones. That is the reality. And in September of 2023, the Federal Aviation Administration, the FAA, changed the rules so that drones could fly at night. And that may be one of the reasons why now people are seeing more drones than they did before — especially from dawn to dusk.
He added, “And so that is the reality. But I want to assure the American public that we are on it. We are working in close coordination with state and local authorities.”
Schumer told his followers on X, formerly Twitter, that he “pushing for answers” following the sightings of drones all over his state.
I’m pushing for answers amid these drone sightings.
I’m calling for @SecMayorkas to deploy special drone-detection tech across NY and NJ.
And I’m working to pass a bill in the Senate to give local law enforcement more tools for drone detection.
