‘Shut Up!’ House Republicans Boo, Heckle Reporter For Asking Speaker Nominee Mike Johnson About ‘Effort to Overturn the 2020 Election’
ABC News senior congressional correspondent Rachel Scott was booed and heckled by House Republicans on Tuesday after she asked Republican nominee for House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) a question about “the effort to overturn the 2020 election result.”
Johnson held a press conference flanked by many of his Republican colleagues after it was announced that he would be the fourth Republican nominee for House speaker this month.
As Johnson fielded questions from members of the press, Scott asked, “Mr. Johnson, you helped lead the effort to overturn the 2020 election result. Do you—”
Scott was quickly drowned out by House Republicans who laughed, booed, and heckled the reporter while Johnson shook his head at her.
80-year-old Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) — who stood next to Johnson at the podium along with Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) — had the loudest response, yelling, “Shut up! Shut up!” before Johnson moved on to the next question.
Following the incident, Scott identified herself on social media as the reporter from the press conference:
I asked the Mike Johnson if he stands by his efforts to try to overturn the 2020 election.
Members started boo’ing.
I also asked if he would support more aid to Ukraine and Irael.
“Go away! Go away!” one member shouted.
“We’re not doing any policy tonight,” Johnson said.
Johnson became the latest Republican nominee for House speaker on Tuesday with 128 votes after Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) dropped out of the race that same day, just hours after his own nomination, after he received opposition from former President Donald Trump.
