‘Sleepwalking Into a Dictatorship’: Liz Cheney Warns Trump Winning GOP Primary Could Be End of the Republic

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), once the chair of the House GOP Conference, spoke with CBS Sunday Morning about her new book – a clip of which was dropped on Friday.

John Dickerson asks Cheney in the preview clip, “You say Donald Trump, if he is reelected, it will be the end of the republic. What do you mean?”

“He’s told us what he will do,” Cheney replied, adding:

It’s very easy to see the steps that he will take. People who say, well, if he’s elected, it’s not that dangerous because we have all of these checks and balances, don’t fully understand the extent to which the Republicans in Congress today have been co-opted. One of the things that we see happening today is sort of sleepwalking into a dictatorship in the United States.

Cheney’s new book, Oath and Honor, which is set to be published on Dec. 5th, has been making headlines as she dishes dirt on conversations she had with fellow GOP House members regarding the rehabilitation of Donald Trump in the party.

CNN’s Jamie Gangel received an advance except from the book and reported, “One story here about a Republican colleague that I think goes to the naming names. There’s an extraordinary scene on January 6th that she recounts where Republican members are sort of being asked to sign these sheets for electoral vote objections.”

“And she writes about Congressman Mark Green of Tennessee. Yeah. And he’s signing and she hears him and, quote, as he moved down the line signing his name to the pieces of paper. Greene said sheepishly to no one in particular, ‘the things we do for the Orange Jesus,’” Gangle concluded.
