House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) raised eyebrows on Tuesday by saying he would join with Donald Trump to “take a blowtorch to the regulatory state” – including Obamacare.
Johnson’s remark was made during a campaign stop in Pennsylvania and was first reported by NBC News. The exchange has since gone viral online as both critics and Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign have jumped on it.
“Health care reform’s going to be a big part of the agenda,” Johnson told voters as one yelled back, “No Obamacare?”
“No Obamacare,” Johnson replied. “The A.C.A. is so deeply ingrained, we need massive reform to make this work, and we’ve got a lot of ideas on how to do that.”
Johnson added that the House GOP’s “docs caucus” was looking at how to reform or dismantle the Affordable Care Act, which Trump has embraced this campaign – despite leading the charge to get rid of it in the past.
“We want to take a blowtorch to the regulatory state,” Johnson concluded.
