Top Jim Jordan Ally Dismisses Death Threats Issued to Holdouts as ‘Red Herring’

Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA) took a shot at the members of the Republican caucus complaining about the threat-laden campaign to make Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) the next speaker of the House on Friday, as Jordan hurtles toward a third vote on his candidacy.

“All of us in Congress receive death threats. I don’t know if that’s a newsflash for anybody here,  there are people out in the world that dislike us and threaten us. That’s nothing new. It’s nothing new to any member of Congress. We all know it,” Perry told reporters on Friday. “That is another red herring.”

He continued:

And let me just say this: They didn’t seem to mind, no one in this town seemed to mind the pressure campaign from all the lobbyists and the special interests in Washington, D.C. in January. But suddenly, now they mind all the calls, and the emails, and the texts, and the letters, and the visits from their own constituents.

On X (formerly known as Twitter), Perry doubled down on the claim, arguing that “If you’re not voting for Jim Jordan, you at least owe it to the American People to tell them the REAL REASON.”

A number of holdouts have said that they and there families are being harassed over their opposition to Jordan’s ascension, with Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA) and Drew Ferguson (R-GA) saying that they have received death threats.

On Thursday, Ferguson told the GOP conference that a sheriff was stationed outside of his daughter’s school as a result of credible threats he had received from supporters of Jordan.

While Perry dismissed the holdouts’ concerns, Jordan himself has condemned the threats.

“No American should accost another for their beliefs. We condemn all threats against our colleagues and it is imperative that we come together. Stop. It’s abhorrent,” said Jordan on Wednesday.
