Trump Accuses Fed Chairman, Who He Nominated, of Trying to Improve Economy to Help Joe Biden: ‘He’s Political’

Former President Donald Trump on Friday accused Fed Chairman Jerome Powell, who he nominated, as wanting to bring down inflation and interest rates in order to help President Joe Biden get reelected.

“Well, I think he’s going to do something to probably help the Democrats, you know. I think if he lowers interest rates. But you have the potential of having massive inflation again, because the Middle East could drive up the price of energy,” Trump told Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo.

“You know, energy has so much to do with it. And the Middle East, again, the bombs are dropping all over the place and the ships are starting to get hit and hit hard. If that happens, you’re going to have tremendous spikes in the price of oil. And if you do that, you’re going to have big inflation. He’s not going to be able to do anything. But it looks to me like
he’s trying to lower interest rates for the sake of maybe, getting people elected, I don’t know,” Trump added.

“So you think he’s political? He’s just going to cut rates to help Biden?” followed up Bartiromo.

“I do, I think he’s political,” shot back Trump.

Notably, Trump nominated Powell in 2017, saying, “He’s strong, he’s committed, he’s smart.”

Bartiromo asked former GOP U.S. Senate candidate Joe Pinion to weigh in on Trump’s comments. Pinion said, “Well look I think Jay Powell has made it quite clear he wants no more inflation on his watch. He does not want that to be his epigraph. I think conversely Joe Biden doing everything humanly possible to make sure no recession on his watch. So that tug of war between the spending and the rate cuts a big thing.”
