A new Pew Research Center poll elicited interesting responses when asking what Americans thought about Democratic elected officials battling against President Donald Trump’s policies. It’s expected that Democrats would want that, but a surprising number of Republicans did too.

This latest Pew survey was conducted online and via live telephone interviews on landline and cell phones from April 7 to 13 among 3,589 U.S. adults selected in Pew’s “American Trends Panel” (methodology explained here), with questions asked both in English and Spanish. The sample was weighted to correspond with the national population regarding age, gender, race/ethnicity, religion, education, geographic location, partisan affiliation, and other demographic categories. The margin of error was +/- 1.8 percentage points for the whole group, +/- 2.6 percentage points for the 1,664 Republican/lean Republican respondents, and +/- 2.5 percentage points for the 1,820 Democrat/lean Democrat respondents.

Pollsters asked if respondents thought Democratic elected officials should try to find common ground with Trump, and vice versa, as well as asking about pushing hard against each other’s policies.

A large majority of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents said that it was important for Democratic officials to push back on Trump’s policies when they disagree: 59% said extremely important, 25% important, 12% somewhat important, and single-digit responses for not too important or not at all important.

That’s not particularly surprising.

The overall sample, however, still voiced strong support for elected Democrats to push back on Trump’s policies, with 32% saying it was extremely important, 20% very important, and 23% somewhat important.

That’s because a majority of Republicans still said they want Democratic officials to push back on Trump.

Among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, 54% said it was at least somewhat important for Democrats to push back against Trump.
