Just three monthss after the building’s heating system went haywire and caused a fire that injured three people, another accidental blaze was caused in one of Trump Tower’s sprinkler-less residential floors — destroying an apartment and killing one resident.
New York City Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro told reporters that the 58-story tower’s top floors did not have the necessary city mandated sprinkler devices that could have stopped the fire.
“It’s a well-built building,” Nigro said, responding to President Donald Trump’s defense of his building. “The upper floors, the resident floors, are not sprinklered.”
He continued by commending his fire fighters’ efforts: “This was a very difficult fire. As you can imagine, the apartment is quite large. We are 50 stories up. The rest of the building had a considerable amount of smoke.”
Meanwhile, Trump responded to the news by tweeting.
“Fire at Trump Tower is out. Very confined (well built building). Firemen (and women) did a great job. THANK YOU!” Said the president.

While Trump Tower’s construction took place before New York City mandated sprinkler systems, owners of such residential spaces are supposed to update their buildings to keep with current safety standards, per USA Today.
The fire, which broke out late Saturday afternoon and resulted in six firefighters being injured, did not impact any of the first family who own the building, as none were present during the deadly blaze.
