Former President Donald Trump did not mention North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson during a Saturday rally in the state, defying reported calls from those close to him to distance himself from the gubernatorial candidate.
Maggie Haberman with The New York Times reported Friday that people close to the former president had advised him to distance himself from Robinson – who he enthusiastically endorsed. Trump had previously gone as far as to compare the embattled Republican to Martin Luther King Jr.
During his rally in Wilmington, Trump criticized Vice President Kamala Harris, vowed to lower prices, and promised to protect the Second Amendment. He did not mention Robinson – who was absent from the rally – before, during, or after the event.
CNN reported this week an email account linked to the North Carolina Republican had been linked to a pornographic website in which the candidate had referred to himself as a “Black Nazi” and praised some content for featuring transgender women with penises. CNN’s KFILE reported:
Many of Robinson’s comments were gratuitously sexual and lewd in nature. They were made between 2008 and 2012 on “Nude Africa,” a pornographic website that includes a message board. The comments were made under the username minisoldr, a moniker Robinson used frequently online.
Robinson has denied he left the comments, which were posted more than a decade ago and have since been deleted.
Haberman told CNN Friday night that sources close to Trump had told her he intended to put distance between himself and Robinson by Saturday’s rally. Haberman said:
I think it’s going to look like saying the minimum. What most people who have talked to him said they expect him to say is some version of “I hardly know the guy.” As we know right now, Democrats are airing an ad tying Trump to Mark Robinson. And I don’t know if that might make him say something different if he would want to condemn it or try to distance himself further and be more forceful about it. But his team is certainly looking to put a lot of miles between Donald Trump and Mark Robinson, and had been I should note, leading up to this because there has been as discussed before, this swirl of rumors around him for some time, a lot of concerns around him for some time, Trump got behind him anyway.
