‘Very Fair’: Trump Offers Rare Praise For the Press During Meeting With European Leaders

President Donald Trump offered rare praise for the media at the conclusion of his meeting with European Leaders in the White House.

Days after his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump on Monday met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for continued talks about bringing an end to the war. Once his meeting with Zelensky ended, Trump gathered with numerous other European leaders in a different part of the White House.

As Trump concluded the larger meeting, he felt compelled to praise the press in attendance for what he considered to be “fair coverage” of the day’s events:

So I want to thank you all; and the media, I want to thank you. We’re going to be staying here for a little while. Then, we’re going to walk over to the Oval Office and we’re going to have another little discussion about similar matters; and then they’re going to go home to their great countries and report. And I’m going to remain here and work, and you’re going to go and work. We’re all going to be working one — we may be in a different location, but that’s what we know how to do is work.

But I want to thank — the media’s been actually very fair, generally speaking, very fair. I think it’s important that they’re fair because this is a very important subject. We have to get it ended, and so that’s all we ask for is fairness with the media. Thank you all very much. We appreciate it. Thank you very much.

The comments were a stark contrast to Trump’s usual treatment of the press, whom he regularly blasts as “the enemy of the people” and has explicitly sought to undermine. In addition to the multiple lawsuits he’s filed against major networks, Trump repeatedly berates members of the press when he takes exception to specific questions.
