Stephen A. Smith Rips Deion Sanders-Led Colorado Football For Complete Meltdown: ‘It’s an Absolute Disgrace’
Stephen A. Smith on Monday accused the University of Colorado football team of letting the hype brought on by coach Deion Sanders get to them.
On Friday, the Buffaloes led Stanford 29-0 at the half. What followed was a complete meltdown as the team let Stanford get back into the game and win 46-43 in double overtime.
Smith called the performance a “disgrace.”
“It’s an absolute disgrace,” Smith said on First Take. “Unacceptable. The fact of the matter is Colorado came into this game 13-point favorites and got outscored by a 13-point underdog 46-14 in the second half after being up 29-0. They’re now 1-3 in the Pac-12. Their defense has allowed the second-most yards per game at 473.7, Shannon [Sharpe], and the seventh-most points per game at 35.9 in all of the entire FBS.”
Smith then attributed the loss to the players getting “caught up in the shine” of Sanders, who’s completely transformed the program and generated immediate buzz in his first year as a coach.
The commentator even called out Shedeur Sanders, Colorado’s quarterback and Deion’s son. At halftime, his social media began updating, leading some to assume Shedeur was using his phone in the middle of a game the team was handily winning.
“Whether it was you or by accident it was somebody on your social media team, you cannot have something being posted at halftime of a damn game,” Smith said. “Tom Brady and your dad already joked with you about what you were driving around with and how you needed to be in the film room. Well, guess what? It is no longer a laughing matter. Y’all are getting your ass kicked.”
Coach Sanders didn’t fight Smith’s words. In fact, not long after Smith made those comments, Sanders took to social to agree with Smith while also emphasizing that his team needs to move on from the disappointing loss.
“He’s right,” Sanders said. “Now let’s move on.”
