‘The Worst Team in Probably the Whole F*cking MLB’: Mets Pitcher Who Tossed Glove into Stands Gets DFA’d After Blasting His Own Club
A New York Mets reliever who was ejected during Wednesday’s game and tossed his glove into the stands has been designated for assignment after he called the club “the worst team in probably the whole fucking MLB.”
Like the Mets, Jorge Lopez had a rough day. New York, which is now 22-33 on the season, trailed the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-0 at Citi Field but tied the game in the fifth. However, the wheels came off in the eighth as the bullpen coughed up six runs, with Lopez allowing two. After disputing a check-swing call with the third base umpire, Lopez was ejected. The pitcher untucked his shirt and threw his glove – underhanded – into the stands over the protective netting. Los Angeles won 10-3.
“That’s where the Mets are right now,” said Mets color commentator Ron Darling upon watching a replay of Lopez throwing his glove.
After the game, a reporter asked the pitcher about the incident while noting that the team’s manager did not appreciate his reaction to the ejection.
“Carlos Mendoza said that he understands the emotion, but that that particular action of throwing your glove into the stands is unacceptable,” the reporter said. “Looking back on it, do you regret doing that?”
Lopez replied:
No. No, I don’t, I don’t regret it. I think I’ve been [on] the worst team in probably the whole fucking MLB. So, you know, whatever happened, happened. So. But… I’ll be tomorrow here if they want me, you know, whatever they want to do. So, I’m going to keep doing this thing, you know. So, I’m healthy and whatever… I’m ready to come back tomorrow if they want me to be here. So I’ll be here.
Lopez will not be there, as the Mets designated him for assignment following his comments. With the move, he will be off the 40-man roster. The team can trade Lopez or place him on waivers, in which case, any team may claim him.
A nine-year veteran of the league, Lopez has pitched in 28 games this season and notched an ERA of 3.76.
For what it’s worth, by winning percentage, the Mets are currently the fifth-worst team in Major League Baseball.
