‘They’re Playing in a POOL’: U.S. Women’s Soccer Team Plays Through Waterlogged Match That Somehow Wasn’t Postponed
The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team defeated Canada in the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinal in a waterlogged match that probably should have been delayed or postponed.
Playing in San Diego, California’s Snapdragon Stadium, the team had to deal with substantial flooding throughout most of the pitch. In fact, the flooding was so bad that the ball could barely roll on the grass. There were countless instances of players trying to dribble the ball only for them to run right past it due to its sudden stop.
For the viewers at home, it was obvious the match should have been stopped.

Despite the inclement weather, the Americans won with a penalty kick shootout. Before that shootout, the teams actually managed to score a combined four goals.
American striker Alex Morgan was surprised they played considering the conditions of the pitch.
“In the very beginning, I was surprised that the game even continued on because it was just puddles everywhere,” Morgan said.
“I think all of the players unanimously — between the U.S. and Canada — thought the game was gonna be called early on. [We] weren’t expecting to continue playing; but as the ref continued to allow play, we had to stay focused and know that it was not really going to be a game of soccer.”
