‘How’s It Going In There?’ Trump Confronted By Reporter Outside Court Moments After Nearly Being Thrown Off the Stand
Former President Donald Trump was unusually short on words when asked how things have gone for him while on the stand for his fraud trial.
The court went into recess on Monday in the midst of Trump’s New York trial for his alleged civil business fraud. When the trial was suspended and Trump walked out of the courtroom, a reporter tried to ask him, “How’s it going in there?”
Trump declined to say anything, giving only a “zip-your-lips” gesture as he walked away.
Fireworks were expected from the trial since Trump once again railed against the case before walking in to take the stand. Once he got there, the former president answered questions with long-winded monologues and more attacks against Judge Arthur Engoron, who eventually warned Trump’s legal team what would happen if his antics continued.
“I beseech you to control him if you can,” Engoron said. “If you can’t, I will. I will excuse him and draw every negative inference that I can.” Trump is under a partial gag order in the trial after he publicly attacked the judge’s law clerk, a private citizen, and posted both her name and a link to her Instagram account to his social media. Trump is barred from further public attacks on court staffers.
Trump is on trial in New York City to determine the penalties related to New York Attorney General Letitia James’s civil suit against Trump, his company, and his adult sons. James alleges that Trump committed fraud by falsely inflating his assets for well over a decade. Engoron has already found Trump liable for the fraud in a summary ruling and the trial is ongoing to determine penalties.
James is seeking a $250 million fine and to bar Trump and his sons from doing business in the state of New York, which would effectively dissolve his company and force the sale of several of his highly indebted assets.
