Republican Party Turns on Justin Amash After Congressman Calls For Trump Impeachment

Republican Party leaders are turning against Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) following the libertarian congressman’s call to impeach President Donald Trump.

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said in a Saturday night tweet that “it’s sad to see Congressman Amash parroting the Democrats’ talking points on Russia.”

“Voters in Amash’s district strongly support this President, and would rather their Congressman work to support the President’s policies that have brought jobs, increased wages and made life better for Americans,” McDaniel added.

In a series of tweets posted Saturday, Amash says he concluded that Trump “engaged in impeachable conduct,” and Attorney General Bill Barr “deliberately misrepresented” special counsel Robert Mueller’s report.

Likewise, Michigan Republican Party Chair Laura Cox accused Amash (whose district includes the cities of Battle Creek and Grand Rapids) of opposing Trump’s agenda, saying “Justin Amash has opposed his ‘America First’ agenda every step of the way.”

In a follow up tweet, she called Amash’s statement “Shameful.”

According to FiveThirtyEight, Amash is a reliable GOP vote on a number of issues supported by the president but has voted against him on other issues, including two votes to overturn Trump’s declaration of emergency for border wall funding.
