Rep. Mo Brooks, who is running for Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ vacated Alabama senate seat, has been begging for President Donald Trump to support his bid — and has now released a campaign ad bashing Sen. Mitch McConnell, Trump’s preferred target this week.
Trump scorned Brooks this week when he threw an endorsement to one of the congressman’s opponents, Luther Strange, the temporarily-appointed senator for Sessions’ seat, who boasts the support of the Senate Majority Leader.
Brooks’ appeal to Trump rests on their shared disdain for McConnell, who the president has taken to task this week over the failure of GOP efforts to pass health care legislation and Trump’s stalled agenda.
And now, a new campaign ad from the Alabama congressman features Trump’s tweet bashing McConnell.
“You’re absolutely right Mr. President,” Brooks says in the 30-second ad. “And Luther Strange and Mitch McConnell, they’re dead wrong.”
Speaking into the camera in a tone that leads one to believe he consumed a large quantity of Valium for the ad shoot, Brooks softly knocks McConnell and Strange for “failing” the president on “Obamacare, building the wall, balancing the budget.”
“McConnell and Strange are weak, but together we can be strong,” he continued, limply. “Mr. President, isn’t it time we tell McConnell and Strange, ‘you’re fired.'”
The Alabama senate primary election is slated for August 15. As of writing, Trump has yet to switch change his endorsement from Strange to Brooks.
