Trump Claims Letitia James Drove Exxon Out of New York, But the Company Actually Left in 1989
At a press conference following closing arguments in the damages phase of his business fraud trial, Donald Trump continued to falsely blame New York Attorney General Letitia James for driving out multinational oil company, Exxon.
“During the hearing you said that Exxon left New York because of the New York Attorney General’s case but Exxon actually left in 1989,” a reporter said during Q & A.
“No, they took the rest of their divisions out. They left earlier,” Trump said. “They were treated very badly in New York. You could have had them in new York, they could have been paying a lot of money.”
“But it wasn’t Letitia James,” the reporter pushed back.
“No, I think if you take a look, you read the case, study the case, you’ll see that they took big divisions out after that. They originally left and then took the rest out,” Trump said.
Forbes reported, “Exxon moved its headquarters from Manhattan to Dallas in 1989, the year James received her law license.” James won the A.G.’s seat in 2018.
When allowed to speak in court on Thursday, Trump said, “This is a disgraceful situation, this is why businesses are fleeing New York, like Exxon.”
NBC News reported, “He was possibly referring to past litigation between Exxon and the attorney general’s office, which involved an investigation into whether the company misled investors about its knowledge of climate change.”
Engoron has already ruled Trump liable for fraud, and is expected to make his decision on damages by the end of January. James has asked the court to fine Trump $340 million and impose a lifetime ban on Trump business operations in New York.
