Al Sharpton gave a brief response today to Donald Trump Jr. citing him in defending his father from charges of racism.
Trump Jr. said that those accusations are ridiculous and do a disservice to actual racism, while also citing Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and “all the rappers” that liked him before he got into politics.
In a clip that aired during Ari Melber‘s show tonight, Sharpton said he met Trump “marching on him about Central Park” and “later he tried to turn Democrat… then he went all the way back right with birtherism.”
“We haven’t changed,” Sharpton said. “He changed. And what he’s changed to become is one who has proposed some of the most racist, bigoted policies… He is promoting racism.”
Sharpton’s feelings about Trump over the years have indeed changed. As he said in an early 2016 interview, “I don’t like what he’s doing. But I don’t dislike him. He’s the kind of personality that is hard to dislike. He’s entertaining, let’s put it that way. You’d have to be a New Yorker to understand him.”
