Barstool Sports’ Dave Portnoy Reveals He Was Asked to Be in Trump’s Commerce Department

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy revealed on Friday that he was asked to be part of the Department of Commerce under President Donald Trump.

Portnoy joined Fox Business’ Stuart Varney on Friday and revealed he was asked to be part of Trump’s administration during a discussion about Elon Musk’s role with DOGE. Portnoy is a stockholder in Musk’s Tesla and suggested the billionaire should be more focused on his company as the stock has dropped more than 20% in a month.

While discussing Musk’s focus on DOGE, Portnoy revealed he was asked to work in the Commerce Department, but a condition was he couldn’t run Barstool Sports, a company founded in 2003 to act as an alternative to mainstream sports outlets like ESPN.

Portnoy told Varney:

I got asked to be — and they didn’t follow through — [to work for] the Secretary of Commerce for Trump’s department, to work under. They asked me that and they said a condition would be I can’t run Barstool Sports. Do you have somebody who could run it? Now, I don’t know if it was serious if I said yes, but if you’re running a company, it’s tough to also run the government, it would seem, so I do think it’s a very fair question to ask [Musk], what are you doing for Tesla?

Portnoy said he’s overall happy with Trump’s opening weeks in office, but called the recent release of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein a “circus.” He also argued the administration should be more focused on crypto as it was a large part of the campaign.

“Overall, he’s doing what he said he’s going to do. I don’t — I’m very simple, man, Stuart,” he said. “I like a lot of things. I like what my stocks are going up and my wallet’s getting fatter.”
