Just months after former network anchor Gretchen Carlson first filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against then-Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes in New Jersey, the network has settled the former host of The Real Story.

Vanity Fair’s Hive is also reporting that an “unprecedented apology” is in the works from Ailes in addition to the $20 million settlement.
After Carlson’s initial civil action complaint was filed on July 6, Ailes harshly responded in a statement, “Gretchen Carlson’s allegations are false. This is a retaliatory suit for the network’s decision not to renew her contract.”
The move comes just days after New York Magazine‘s Gabriel Sherman published his lengthy reveal of the network’s practices and the culture of surveillance that Ailes allegedly allowed to persist at 1211 Avenue of the Americas.
Ailes largely responded to the Sherman story by hiring libel lawyer Charles Harder — who anchored Hulk Hogan‘s successfully lucrative $140 million takedown of Gawker — sending “demand” letters to Sherman and NY Mag both.
According to POLITICO’s Hadas Gold, representatives for Carlson at this time have “no comment” on the Vanity Fair report. On her personal website, Carlson has issued a statement on the developments, noting:
I am gratified that 21st Century Fox took decisive action after I filed my Complaint. I’m ready to move on to the next chapter of my life in which I will redouble my efforts to empower women in the workplace. I want to thank all the brave women who came forward to tell their own stories and the many people across the country who embraced and supported me in their #StandWithGretchen. All women deserve a dignified and respectful workplace.
21st Century Fox has said in a statement this morning:
21st Century Fox is pleased to announce that we have settled Gretchen Carlson’s lawsuit. During her tenure at Fox News, Gretchen exhibited the highest standards of journalism and professionalism. She developed a loyal audience and was a daily source of information for many Americans. We are proud that she was part of the Fox News team.
