Chris Wallace Throws Cold Water on Cohen Bombshell: ‘So What?’, ‘Long Way’ From Collusion
Chris Wallace is dismissing the notion that the latest news about Michael Cohen will be of any real political or legal danger to President Donald Trump.
The Fox host spoke with Sandra Smith on America’s Newsroom Friday and shared his thoughts on Cohen’s claim that the president approved Donald Trump Jr.‘s infamous 2016 meeting with a Russian lawyer at Trump Tower. Wallace acknowledged that Cohen’s claim suggests that Trump lied about what he knew about the meeting, but he seemed to write off the possibility that the White House will face problematic new questions about the president’s connection to Russia.
“It seems to me the worst that you could say, assuming that Cohen is telling the truth now, is that Donald Trump lied back in 2017. But so what? It’s not admirable, you would hope he wouldn’t, but it is not breaking the law: lying to the media. He certainly wouldn’t be the first president, if he did, who had done so. And even the meeting itself – while it certainly doesn’t seem praise-worthy that American political candidates or their team would be meeting with a Russian lawyer to try to get dirt on Hillary Clinton that was being offered to them – that falls a long way from any hint of collusion between Trump and the Kremlin.”
Wallace went on to say that unless Cohen can provide evidence for his claim, it remains a matter of his word against Trump’s, and it won’t have a substantial impact on special counsel Robert Mueller‘s investigation.
