CNN’s Don Lemon Compares Trump Advisors’ Fury Over Coats Reaction to Scene from ‘Mommy Dearest’
During a panel on CNN Thursday night, talk turned to a Washington Post report claiming that the Trump’s advisors were in an uproar over Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats’ unscripted and off-guard response to the news that President Donald Trump planned to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to Washington DC.
When asked about the visit by NBC’s Andrea Mitchell during the Aspen Security Forum, Coats — who was obviously unaware of the plan — said, “Say that again…Did I hear you?”
Then, after she repeated it, Coats said, “That’s going to be special.”
According to WaPo, within the White House, Trump’s advisors were pissed by Coats and his Aspen performance.
Inside the White House, Trump’s advisers were in an uproar over Coats’s interview in Aspen, Colo. They said the optics were especially damaging, noting that at moments Coats appeared to be laughing at the president, playing to his audience of the intellectual elite in a manner that was sure to infuriate Trump.
“Coats has gone rogue,” said one senior White House official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to provide a candid assessment.
WaPo also noted Trump is likely to take it very personally.
White House aides are worried that Trump will interpret the comments by Coats as a personal betrayal since they came so soon after the president praised him. Explaining that Trump does not take kindly to slights and that he nurses grudges, one official predicted that Coats’s Aspen interview could bother the president more than the many ethical blunders of Scott Pruitt, who was ousted as Environmental Protection Agency administrator.
Speaking on the reports that Coats may be in trouble, Republican strategist Rick Wilson seemed unsurprised.
“Of course,” he said. “Any time someone in the Trump world deviates from the ideology of esoteric Trumpism they’re going to get stabbed in the back.”
Lemon then said this: “When I read this, I know it sounds odd, it reminded me the scene from ‘Mommy Dearest’ where she beats her daughter because she said her daughter, she said ‘you deliberately embarrass me in front of a reporter.’ Not the wire hangers… she like chokes her in the living room in front of the reporter.”
